Library Services and Policies for Faculty
Collection Development - The Library Manager works with faculty members to build a core collection of resource materials for each program offered by NWTC. [See ordering instructions below]. October 1st is the deadline for submitting requests to the Library Manager for new reference and media purchases. All questions should be directed to Kim LaPlante at 920-498-5487.
Examination Materials - The Library Manager works with faculty members to order preview materials to determine course relevancy. Contact Kim LaPlante at 920-498-5487 to arrange for previewing materials.
Faculty Orientation - The Library Manager provides new faculty members with a general tour of the Library and its services and procedures. Any faculty member can get a tour or resource consultation by calling Kim LaPlante at 920-498-5487.
Traditional and Electronic Reserves - Books, articles, tapes, etc. that are given as a special assignment outside the regular textbook may be put on reserve at the Circulation Desk in the Library. Items in electronic format can be posted on course web sites created by the Library staff and searchable by students both on and off campus. [See electronic submission instructions]. Faculty who would like to create and manage their own e-reserve course pages (Super Faculty) should contact Kim LaPlante at 920-498-5487 to schedule a training session (1 hour).
Interlibrary Loan Services - The Library will borrow books and audiovisual materials and will request photocopies of periodical articles from other libraries in order to satisfy the needs of faculty members. NWTC users can search the state catalog (WISCAT) or the world catalog (WORLDCAT) to find materials at other libraries and automatically request them online. Otherwise, staff can fill out a request form at the Circulation Desk or call Ellen Bricco at 920-498-5493. The amount of time to receive materials from other libraries varies, but the average is about one week (Articles from UW-Madison can arrive within 2 days electronically). Please allow sufficient time in requesting interlibrary loan materials.
Courtesy Cards and NEW ERA Cards - The Library provides courtesy cards to faculty members giving them temporary borrowing privileges at other local libraries (including UW-Green Bay and UW-Oshkosh). Courtesy Cards are available at the Circulation Desk. Faculty can also show their NWTC id at any NEW ERA library to receive a NEW ERA library card providing them with borrowing privileges at all of those libraries.
Laptop Computer Loans - The Library owns a limited supply of laptops for use by faculty and staff members. These laptops can be checked out for two weeks at a time and can be reserved (see complete laptop policy). Contact Don Whitson at 920-498-6289 or Simon Yang at 920-498-5694 to place your reservation.
Electronic Journal Alerts - The Library subscribes to online databases with electronic access to over 12,000 journals. Several of these databases allow faculty and staff to set up RSS feeds and e-journal alerts which email them the table of contents and links to the articles each month. If you would like assistance in setting up e-journal alerts for your favorite journals, simply call Suzanne Holvenstot at 920-498-5732.
Student Orientation Tours - The Coordinator of Library Instruction provides both general and subject-specific tours for students by instructor appointment. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and briefly include the physical layout of the Library, circulation policies, and demonstrations of the online catalog, online databases, e-books, and electronic reserve system. Contact Julie Chapman at 920-498-5490 to schedule a daytime or nighttime tour. Julie can also customize a tour to fit your needs, visit your classroom for a library instruction session, or work with you to integrate the Library's online tours into your curriculum.
Pathfinders - The Coordinator of Library Instruction has created pathfinders or research guides to help students locate useful materials for their program. These online guides are located on the Library home page and include direct keyword searches of the library catalog, lists of recommended reference works, advice on searching the online databases, and useful web sites. Contact Julie Chapman at 920-498-5490 to request the creation of a pathfinder for your area.
Reference Assistance - The Coordinator of Library Instruction assists with Internet and database searches, formulates research plans for faculty members and students, and helps in locating specific materials and information. Submit your questions either in person, via the phone at 920-498-5490, or via our Ask-A-Librarian web form.
New Materials Notification - All new library materials can be found using the New Materials tab of the library catalog. The Library also regularly announces some of its new acquisitions on a page of the staff newsletter. Faculty members are encouraged to review these new materials for inclusion in their classes.
Circulation Policies For Faculty
NWTC faculty are limited to 25 items checked out at a time (excluding departmental accounts).
- Books and Magazines will circulate for two weeks and can be renewed for another two weeks.
- Audiovisual materials and Videocassettes circulate for one week and can be renewed for one more week.
- Software has unlimited checkout time.
- Reference materials do not circulate. However, photocopies can be made free of charge. Faculty can borrow a reference book for 24 hours with permission from the Library Manager.
To avoid overdue notices, faculty should let Library staff know right away if they will require more time than usual to use the items they are checking out. Items can be renewed by phone (920-498-5493) or online unless someone else is waiting to borrow the material. To renew online, access the library catalog at http://nwtclib.wctc.edu and choose the Patron option. Type in your 8-digit employee id and last name to see your record. Select the items you wish to renew and click the Renew button.
Overdue materials may be reported to your dean. In order that all Library users may have fair access to materials, we ask that you return or renew items before the due date. You will be sent an overdue notice if you keep materials longer than the lending period. If you continue to have multiple overdue materials, your dean will be contacted and may recommend withholding your library privileges.
Lost materials will be charged to the division's reference and media account (unless the department deems the materials to be obsolete). Your dean will be contacted if you lose any library materials.
Procedures for Ordering Materials
- The instructional divisions share funds for reference/media materials for all of the campuses (each department no longer has its own departmental reference/media budget). The Library Manager, Kim LaPlante, is the budget manager for those funds and coordinates all purchasing. All reoccurring requests (subscriptions, standing orders, renewals) are reviewed by the deans in July and are funded before other requests. Each Fall, instructors are given a deadline (usually October 1) to submit additional order requests to the Library Manager. If the requests exceed the budget, they are prioritized by the deans and then purchased by the Library Manager. However, if the budget is not exceeded, remaining funds are used for purchasing instructor requests after the deadline on a first-come first-served basis.
- Instructors do not need to fill out an NWTC Order Requisition to submit a request for purchasing reference/media items. Instead, they should send all of the information they have about the items to Kim LaPlante. Kim accepts requests in any form, but prefers printouts from Amazon.com or other web sites, publisher's catalogs with items circled and prioritized, or emails that list item information, vendor information, and ordering information. Instructors should also add the following information:
- Name of instructor making the request
- Number of copies needed
- Housed in Library or not (Note: Most items should be housed in the Library and listed in our online catalog so that we can keep track of what NWTC owns. They may be checked out to a department indefinitely by contacting Kim LaPlante. However, please let Kim know if an item should not be in the Library or listed in the online catalog).
- Reoccurring or not (If the item needs to be renewed each year or a new edition is purchased each year, please note so that the request gets on next year?s Reoccurring Orders list).
- Instructors will receive a notice through email after the materials have been received and processed through the Library. The notice will give you a link to the catalog record for the item. Reply to the email notification if you want the item put aside for you or checked out and sent to you through intercampus mail. (Non-Library items will be sent to you directly through intercampus mail).
